The 411 from 221: A peek into the future...

We’re not sure how, but February is already in full swing, which means spring is right around the corner. We’ve been hibernating for the last couple of months, but it’s time to start shaking off the cold and dark and make moves towards cleaning up and stepping out. With our newfound attitude, we are on the lookout for fresh trends and advancements in technology and innovation. These elements of surprise make our job exciting, as every project is a little different. We asked our design staff which trends they are ready to leave behind, what they hope to see spread, and what will never go out of style. From pillow pets to cactus terrariums, we got quite an array of feedback from our experts. Only time will tell if both the sun and these trends will make a stand.

MICHAEL: Principal, Architect

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
High-contrast rugs with natural wood pieces and bright, colorful art

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
The big picture will never go out of style. Design is more than picking out cool pieces and putting them in a room. It’s about the integration of all the elements to create a space that is dynamic but balanced. In other words, the whole is worth much more  than the sum of its parts.

TRIPP: Principal, Architect

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
I would like to see sustainability treated less as a value ad, and more as table stakes in any design project.

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
Carefully done, the use of concrete and natural wood finishes together create wonderful compositional tension and resonance.

Laura, Interior Designer

Q: Design trend you'd like to see end (ie. get the hell outta here)?
White walls, eek!

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
Custom-made rugs. Yes, now you can choose the color, pile height, size, shape, and if you’re feeling fancy, design your own pattern…it’s a proverbial rug buffet!

HELENA: Interior Design Assistant

Q: Design trend you'd like to see end (ie. get the hell outta here)?
HGTV. I am all for DIY and budget-friendly solutions, but it’s like fast food for the design world and we need to eat better.

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
Shag carpets are coming back, I can see it! But don’t worry, they are going to blow away their questionable predecessors: textural variations and high quality materials are going to have people on the floor in no time…

STACEY: Project Manager

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
Healing gardens, building integrated solar panels, and transparency (both physical and metaphysical).

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
Things made with wood, floor to ceiling bookcases, and beautiful stairs!

ANN: Project Manager

Q: Design trend you'd like to see end (ie. get the hell outta here)?
Predictions about the next design trend.

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
There are few things that break my heart more than a new (or newly remodeled) space where the lighting design has been ignored. A very plain room can be made fantastic with good lighting. Lighting is an investment and should never be an afterthought—and good lighting will never go out of style.

LIZ: Architect

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
Integration of super graphics into building design…Edge Coffee, anyone?

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
Exposed architectural concrete and natural wood, especially when used together. Tadao Ando’s buildings are a great representation of this style.

MADELINE: Marketing Coordinator

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
I love the unexpected designs that emerge when local designers combine forces, ie. the Egg Press / Schoolhouse Electric collaboration or the Pendleton / Shwood Eyewear sunglasses.
Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
I flip for everything black & white. Also I love a good cactus terrarium.

AMANDA: Graphic Designer

Q: Design trend you'd like to see end (ie. get the hell outta here)?
Micro fiber gives me the shivers. I know a lot of people like it, and it’s very practical, but there’s something about it…

Q: Design trend you expect/like to see take off, especially after we send this out?
Reclaimed materials, particularly in typography.

REBECCA: Office Manager

Q: Design trend you'd like to see end (ie. get the hell outta here)?
I am really ready to see orange and green fade back back into the background once again

Q: Design elements you still freak for regardless of the year?
Stone archways, they make such a visual statement.

If any of these trends take off, we’ll make sure you’re the first to know!
